I would be happy with a ring from the cracker jack box if I really loved the guy. But I would go for the real thing. Why pretend that you have more money than you do? Your love and marriage is more important than the size of your engagement ring.

I would actually wait until me can afford what I really wanted, I waited it actually took about 19 years but it was well worth the wait as I got my 2 carat in 14k and he also redid my grandmothers wedding band for me to match the set, my grandma's band was an antique and meant so much to me!
You can still be engaged without a ring, why not wait until you get exactly what you want?
A gemstone is not for an engagement ring but a birth stone ring, CZ's are a good substitute for the real thing and I guess only you will know the truth.

A gemstone would be my choice. Just because the cut would make it look special. The diamond doesn't sound very impressive, and cubic zirconia rings are cheap, set in gold or not.

I'd say cubic zirconia. That's my taste. Noone knows the difference. But different girls have different tastes.
