i only use nicknames if it has been used basically forever.

depends on if they earn a name.
i have friends that go by other names than their own. and i call my girlfriend turkey (not the insult turkey but like if you were to look in a deli case you will get it)
otherwise i just call them by their name or i call them asshole or fatty. and sometimes ********.

yes, it makes life much more interesting and creates a bond since I tend to use it with close friends that I'm very fond of.
