We need shoes for social reasons and extreme conditions. We live in places far colder than where we were evolved, and we do stuff like building, welding, etc so we need all kinds of protection in hardhat areas, not limited to footwear.
But there is no real need for people to wear shoes all day every day, as most people do, if you don't mind people giving you funny looks. Feet get very tough very quickly; tough enough to deal with broken glass, too. I've been barefoot for over ten years, regularly run at train stations where there's lots of litter, and I have NEVER had a cut. I get a tiny splinter maybe once a year, nothing to write home about and *far* less than I get on my hands (had yet another minor scrape gardening just today, the splinter in my pinky finger from woodworking last week has just healed up, yet no one expects us to wear gloves all the time). Our 'pads' get very thick when barefoot always!
Nor is it necessary to have support, even when walking on pavement; research showed rikshaw coolies ran on pavement all day long and their feet were fine, in much better shape than those of Westerners wearing shoes.

I take it you've never seen a horse's hooves or a cow's or a goat's? I take it you've never felt the toughness of an elephants soles or even a dog's feet? We wear shoes because we don't like puncturing our feet with thorns, rocks nails and glass. What makes you think that animals "get by fine" without protection on their feet? They do not by human standards get by fine, they simply haven't the ability to do anything about it.

Because as a "sanitary" civilization no one wants someones crusty feet all over their nice clean floor. If we lived out in the jungle with the orangutans, leopards, iguana's and various exotic birds we wouldn't need shoes. (Though if you wanna walk around the jungle without shoes you won't be walking for very long) Plus I would think our feet are more sensitive than those of animals.

Not all humans wear shoes!
If you were brought up and never had any shoes, your feet would be hardened and able to cope and you would never have thought of asking this question.

Because animals don't have to deal with the local college students leaving broken bottles in the street.

evolution. we have evolved from being tough cavemen to being what we are today. A race that requires shoes to keep our delicate feet safe.
