I upgraded my laptop's RAM from 512 MB to 1 GB. The Best Buy guy said I could just replace it and turn it on. The computer doesn't do anything when turned on now. I tried putting the old one back in and it still doesn't show anything on the screen. Is there any way to get this working again!?

(it's an HP Pavilion wih XP upgrading to Kingston DDR 1 GB)

Did you take the battery out and unplug it before you swapped the memory? If not you probably fried the motherboard...

In worst case scenario, your motherboard is bad. But let's hope that's not the case.

Make sure that the secondary RAM card (I'm assuming you have two) that you have not replaced is not out of alignment. It could be when you replaced the other, you moved it out of place.

Try running it without any card in the slot that you replaced the RAM in. Make sure that there is one in the other slot though. If this does not work, swap cards and slots until you have tried every combination. By doing so, you may find out if one of the slots (maybe the entire motherboard) or a card is bad.

Also make sure you are not putting the card in the wrong way (if possible).

Probably you installed the memory chip incorrectly. You are supposed to insert the memory chip at a 45 degree angle and then press it down. There should be only one way to install it, and does not take much force. Take out the chip and use a hair dryer to blow out any dust in the socket and try to put in the old one again. After you get the old chip to work, then try the new chip. Take out the battery before you do anything.

Good luck.

If nothing is showing on the screen, it is a problem with the RAM, and it not being seated right.
