1.44 MB is the standard for the 3 1/2 in. floppies in today's computers. There are some 3 1/2 in. disks that store less (DD), but these aren't very common nowadays.
And with flash drives giving you a Gig of storage (more than 700 floppies) for under $20, you're starting to see floppy drives disappear.

All floppy disks found today should be 1.44 megabytes. This is the capacity of the common 3.5-inch disk and are usually referred to as 2HD for double sided high density.
Older disks are single sided high density for 720kb and single sided double density for 360kb. below that are you're talking about 5.25-inch disks with 180kb or less capacity.
Some "floptical" disks incorporate CD-like rings around the edges allowing for greater desity and capacity. This eventually led to the development of zip disks and the like.
It is possible, for example, to store up to 2 meg on a 3.5 2HD disk under specific file formats and using special drives. I messed with this at one point and found it too inconsistant to be practical.

The average floppy's capactity is 1.44 megabytes. Slightly smaller actual available space depending on the OS and other factors, so don't expect much more than 1.2 MB's out of the things.

LOL. Probably more floppies were made for Commodore 64 computers than for others. The Commodore 1541 disk drive formatted them to 170K.
If you're referring to PC clones, then 1.44M (formatted) was the last prevalent standard.
