Air temperature generally decreases with altitude. The main reason for this is the fact that the atmosphere is not directly heated by the solar radiaton but heated from the bottom.
What actually happens is this:The solar radiation reaches the earth's surface (without heating the atmosphere as the incident solar radiation is a short wave radiation which the air can not absorb) and heats the surface first. This heated surface in turn heats the atmospheric air directly above it by conduction. The heated air in the vicinity of the ground then rises upwards as convection current and the upper layers of atmosphere is thus heated from below. That is why the temperature decreases with altitude. The fact that the temperature falls because of the fall in pressure with height is a secondary reason only.

Yes, air temperature decreases (gets colder) as pressure decreases. Pressure decreases as altitude increases because the atmosphere becomes thinner. The reason for the temperature decrease due to pressure is that gas molecules are colliding less because they are more spread apart. It is these collisions that cause the phenomenon of heat. =) Hope this helped.

in the house we're always told that hot air rises and cold air falls etc when thinkin on home heatin - in reality tho outside of the house, the higher the altitude the colder it becomes. we're gettin further and further out of our atmoshere and we become closer to the sub zero temps of outter space
