Bill Gates's father was a very wealthy lawyer in Seattle - while the Gates weren't billionaires, young Bill was far, far from poor.
Looking at the top 10 of the Forbes list of richest Americans, the ones who did pull themselves up from poverty (as opposed to wealthy or even upper-middle class roots) were:
- Sheldon Adelson: son of a New York cabdriver, currently #3 on Forbes list with worth of $28 billion (mostly from owning casinos)
- Larry Ellison: lower-class Chicago upbringing, currently #4 on Forbes list at $26B (founder of Oracle)
- Kirk Kerkorian: son of immigrant farmers, #7 on the list with worth of $18B (from airlines, casinos, and other investments)
