All of our 'dollars' are factors of 100. The one-dollar bill is equal to 100 pennies (100 cents). A 'quarter' is, literally, 1/4 of a dollar (or one-fourth of 100 cents) and is equal to 25 cents. A 'dime' is 10 cents (or one-tenth of a dollar) and there are 10 dimes in one dollar. A 'nickel' is equal to 5 cents, and there are 20 in one dollar (5x20=100). In an example, if you are charged sixty-eight cents (68c) for a chocolate bar, you should give the seller:
two quarters 50cents
one dime +10cents
one nickel + 5cents
three pennies + 3cents

=68cents
If you only have one paper dollar you should expect to have 'change' (the difference) returned to you. Sixty-eight cents (68c), taken from one dollar (100c), leaves thirty-two cents (32c).
one dollar 100cents
sixty-eight cents -68cents
____________________
=32cents
Thirty-two cents is made up of one quarter (25c), one nickel (5c) and two pennies (2c).
Smaller coins may be used: sixty eight cents may formed with 6 dimes (60c), one nickel (5c) and three pennies (3c); It can also beformed with thirteen nickels (13x5=65c) and three pennies or, if all you have is pennies, 68 pennies.
Practice with different combinations of coins, laid out on a table, to see what they look like and notice the many combinations that can be formed to create the same dollar-total.
Whey you begin to see the pattern, move on to paper money. Larger denominations (bills) are based on the single dollar. The five dollar bill is equal to 5-single dollars; ten dollar bill = ten dollars; twenty dollar bill = 20 dollars, and so on. Just as is the case with coins, Larger totals can be formed with smaller bills. Seventeen dollars can be formed with (one) ten dollar bill, (one) five dollar bill and (two) one dollar bills. It can also be made with (three) five dollar bills and (two) one dollar bills.
Once you see the patterns, combinations of dollars AND cents should come easy. Twenty-two dollars and fifty-cents can be formed with (two) ten dollar bills, (two) one dollar bills, (two) quarters and (three) pennies.
ten dollar bill +10.00
ten dollar bill +10.00
one dollar bill +1.00
one dollar bill +1.00
quarter +.25
quarter +.25
penny +.01
penny +.01
penny +.01
