My period stops when I'm asleep - and then starts in the morning and lasts all day.

Why is this?

When you have your period it is because of gravity and your uretha muscles that sometimes push. When you are laying down both of these can not make your period comes down but when you first stand up it should flow right out. Sometimes when you go to the bathroom it won't be there and it will wait so it will evenly flow through out the moprning

the blood flows more when you are active. that's why exercising is really great during your period, to get rid of most of it. the blood isn't flowing as much when you're sleeping, so that may be the case.

you do still have your period at night it just doesnt come out. while laying in the vertical posistioning the blood doesnt flow out as easly. but when you stand up it comes out more. its not tht your period has stoped, its just that it isnt comming out as fast.

It's just that you're lying down, so the blood isn't running out until you stand up.
