I have to agree with other answerers and say be more confident around them. Baby talk and funny faces usually seem to work on babies 6 months and up. Dont worry how ridiculous you may look, its worth it when the baby starts laughing at you. Also, tickling the tummy or doing the "airplane" (holding them {carefully} in the air) always worked on my daughter.

Be more confident around them. If you're scared they can tell because you're not as warm towards them.
They like slow quiet movements when theyre young, and to be held close. The older they get the like bright happy faces, smiles and fun quiet voices. Eventually they like funny faces, flirty eyes, and someone who does fun things, like claps with them or talks to them.
You can talk to them just like you would another person, they dont understand at first, but a smooth quiet voice is soothing to them.
