um, i've tried.
i've watched the videos on the online textbook thing, and nothing is working.
they'll change it to a number that i've never even seen in the equation - no idea how they got it.

q = 9

Here are the steps

5 + 3(q-4) = 2(q+1)

Start by multiplying to get rid of the brackets.

Only multiply everything in the bracket by the number immediately outside it. Leave other number (5) alone.

5 + 3q - 12 = 2q =2 (take care with signs. multiplying a positive by a negative gives you a negative answer)

Next, collect like terms on one side, other terms on the other side of the equals sign.

When you take something across the equals sign, change from pos to neg or neg to pos.

3q - 2q = 2 + 12 - 5

So q = 14 - 5

So q = 9

Distribute 3 to the q and -4.
then distribue the 2 to the q and the one
combine like terms
you should eventually get to -7+3q=2q+2
subtract the 2q from the 3q
then take the 7 and add it to the 2
divide 1q by 9
it equals 9

5 + 3(q-4) = 2(q+1)

5 + 3q -12 = 2q + 2

-7 + 3q = 2q + 2

q = 9

check: 5 + 3(9-4) = 2(9+1)

5 + 3(5) = 2(10)

5 + 15 = 20

5+3(q-4)=2(q+1)
u knw the BODMAS(Bracket,Of,Division,Multiplication,Addition,Subtraction)rule right.u group the equation as follows;
5+[3(q-4)]=[2(q+1)] then u expand the bracket;
5+[3*q+3*(-4)]=[2*q+2*1]
5+3q+-12=2q+2(with the - affecting the + in [+3*(-4)] (+ * - = -)
5+3q-12=2q+2
collect like terms
5-12+3q=2q+2
3q-2q=2+12-5(with the signs changing as they cross the equality sign)
q=14-5
q=9.

check:
substitute q for 9
5+3(9-4)=2(9+1)
5+3*5=2*10
5+15=20
20=20

5+3(q-4)=2(q+1)
5 + 3q -12 = 2q + 2 Distrubtion
3q -7 = 2q +2 (5-12= -7)
3q - 7 - 2q = 2q + 2 -2q Subtract 2q from both sides
q - 7 = 2 3q-2q = q & 2q-2q =0
q - 7 + 7 = 2 + 7 Add 7 to both sides
q = 9

5+3(q-4)=2(q+1) first u distribute what's in paranthesis
5+3q-12=2q+2 then u just need to solve it.. (if u dono how to do that i advise u to get a tutor or ahve ur teacher re-explain)
3q-7= 2q+2
q=9

you will only become proficient in math by doing it over and over

5 + 3(q-4) = 2(q + 1) first lets multiply - distributive prop.
5 + 3q - 12 = 2q + 2 this is just multiplication; now simplify

5 + 3q -2q - 12 = 2q - 2q + 2 subtracting 2q to both sides
5 + q - 12 = 2 doing the actual subtraction; now the numbers
q - 7 = 2 now lets add 7 to both sides
q - 7 +7 = 2 - 7 now do the actual calc
q = - 5 and we are done!

5+3(q-4)=2(q+1)
1. 5+ 3q -12= 2q +1 (Just do distributive property. multiply the outside number by the numbers inside one by one)

2. 5+3q-12=2q+2
-7+3q=2q+2 (Just subtracted the like terms- 5-12)

3. -7+3q=2q+2
-2q -2q
-----------------------
-7+q=2 (Dunno how to explain this one......)

4. -7+q=2
+7 +7
----------------
q=9

All what you have to do is get all of the variables on one side, numbers on the other. Don't worry, I had trouble with this before.
