80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Well,I dont really think there is a purpose for us being on earth.I dont think there is a purpose for the earth either. We are all just here, living our everyday lives. We dont have a fate. Our future changes with the choices we make and there is not certan path for us.
It's kind of like we were just a little project for God in his spare time but we developed and were able to live on our own and live a full, happy, productive life(well some of us anyway.)
So,I guess what Im trying to say is,life in general has no purpose but if you go out and do what you want and live you life your way you can give it one.A guy watching TV and sitting on the couch all day doesnt have a purpose in life.
And as far as your second questions goes..theres no reason for that either.I mean God didnt have to make us breathe oxygen we could be on jupiter as far as it matters.Who cares? All that matters is that were here now and we need to make the best of it.

That question drove me crazy five years ago trying to figure out what to do with my life and what to major in the university.
I ended up majoring in Philosophy. Now that questions doesn't bother me at all anymore. Not sure if it was because I was too over depressed through my college years or was it because I realized there are so much uncertainty over what I can really know...or maybe because I've arrived to some answer.
It seems to me nothing in this world really quite matters anymore (at least that's how it feels like) since there're so much unknowns. But one thing is quite directly important -- the feeling of content instead of emptiness (which leads to pain).
This emptiness, I came to equalize with boredom or some thinks it's loneliness. What about a "heart/mind that is lack of occupance"? Philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer'd say intellectual happiness is best way to fight the pain from boredom (http://etext.library.adelaide.edu.au/s/s... ) while writer like Dale Carnegie, author of "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living", acknowledge the pain from borement, but suggest more general solution of finding something you like doing or making boring duties fun. Some Christian'd say God has made a hole in your heart in which nothing can fill it except your belief in God and have Him close to your heart. Others might say the purpose of life is love. You need to find your soul mate. Some might add to it that evolution give us the purpose of nothing but reproduction and survival anyway.
I think which ever path or paths you takes, the remedy behind is to have something that fills and attract your mind into. Intellectual pursuit, lover, hobbies, God. When you have something to go after (and also something that is fruitful, something that won't lead you to terrible consequences and something you truely bring you content consistently, continuously and sustainably). The question as to whether there is a purpose of life doesn't matters anymore... maybe because you've found it. (Have I been going in a big circle?)

Our life's purpose is up to all of us, Who says we have to this and that I don't see a rulebook anywhere life is what you make of it, life is an open highway you choose the route and since you don't know the route the outcome will be a mystery just see where the path leads you, if it leads to happiness then you know your on the right path, if not then you must find a way to get back on the right path.
Never underestimate anyone, We all have potential beyond our wildest dreams despite what others tell us at least that's what I believe, the question is will we realize our potential and make the most of life? I don't know if I ever will, but I'll continue to dream.... and us humans can one day turn our dreams and thoughts into reality...

Lots. If nothing else theres plenty of interesting and beautiful things to see. There are different fields you can excel at should you choose, there are different lifestyles, different cultures, different minds. Theres so much variety and strangeness out there that it'd take many lifetimes to experience it all. If you mean what purpose is there, then why not make your own? Decide what it is that you find worthwhile, even if its just for your own satisfaction, and pursue it. Its a horrific cliche, but life is what you make of it.

The only purpose of life for Man is to find a purpose for himself. You own your consciousness, and you must decided what it is to be used for--no one else can use it for you. Consciousness is defined as "awareness of existential (material) reality," after which, for men, it becomes around the age of 4 "awareness of oneself as an existent OF material reality." This is when he/she has the epiphany of having an identity apart from his/her parents. It is not a 'luxury" to have to choose your own purpose, unlike any brute animal whose destiny is, as Loren Eisely calls it, "the eternal present." Reason is Man's mean of devising ends for himself. The only alternatives are to let someone else choose your purpose, to drift like a boat without a rudder, or death.

We are put here to make this planet a better place to live for ourselves, the next person and the next generation.
We each have a purpose and a legacy to fulfill and leave behind. You have to learn and love yourself in order to realize your potential and purpose.
Think of what Martin Luther King and Ghandi did for the world. Think of what the Officer who caught the rapist or crazed murderer did for the world. Think of what the person did for the world who invented the water purification and filtration system. Think of what doctors do. We are here to help, improve, perfect...and most imprtantly...love.

There is no purpose. There is no meaning. There is no reason. There is only existance and knowing we are alive. If you want some purpose then invent one.
