My baby is due Feb 2 and my baby boy so far weighs 16 oz so I think your boy's weight is ok :)
Did the ultrasound tech at the hospital say he saw only one kidney? If so he should have told you if the reason was because of the baby's position or if it was because there is only one kidney.
Or was it an "informal" scan at your doc's office? In that case the doc probably just didn't see the other one... they are NOT ultrasound technicians and don't always know how to get the best view of the body parts they are looking for!

People can live with one kidney just fine also if u cannot talk to your doctor maybe you should find a new one as with the weight im guessing you are roughly 5-6 months there is plenty of time for weight to increase and sometimes babies arent very big anyways its not because of u but you should really keep an eye on your appetite to make sure you and your baby are getting the nutrients you both need for a healthy pregnancy Also maybe you should look into getting genetic screening and an amnio done its just to make sure nothing is genetically wrong with the baby and that all chromosomes are normal (not to freak you out more than you already are) but all tests can be completed in one day and results usually take 2 weeks they also do a sonogram to make sure the babys heart and other internal organs are ok this is much more advanced than your regular run of the mill sonogram it is much more in depth and they count all fingers and toes and such so the other kidney might have gone undetected this is will give you the full picture from head to toe and pick up on anything your regular sonograms miss congrats on the baby and goodluck!!!

People can live with only one kidney. Too, an ultrasound is not proof positive that the baby has only one kidney. Anyway, a number of congenital kidney abnormalities may occur in children, often originating during that part of the prenatal period when the kidneys are moving into their permanent position. Often these defects do not cause symptoms and require no medical attention. Some children are born with only one kidney (renal agenesis), a condition that poses no health threat as long as the remaining kidney stays healthy. Try not to worry. I know, that's easier said then done.

You didnt mention if it was a bedside ultrasound or formal one but you should be scheduled for a higher level sonogram to that will determine for certain there is only one kidney as it can sometimes be missed. Luckily you need only one kidney to survive. You may also consider having an amniocentesis done to see if there are any chromasomal abnormalies in your baby (not to scare you though). The weight sounds normal at this point.
You should find a new doctor you can talk to and feel comfortable asking questions. He will not provide you with a good pregnancy and childbirth experience (do you really want a jerk delivering your baby???)

there are many children born with just one kidney, and you don;t have to worry about it ,(besides ma be the Dr. couldn't see all )Your baby will be just fine.He will not be able to donate a kidney as he has only 1 , but that's OK as long as he is healthy is the main thing. you still have a few more months and your baby will gain weight during this time.Make sure you take your vitamins everyday and eat right foods for your baby.Lot's of luck

You need an extensive Ultrasound. We were told that our baby's stomach was twisted and contorted. I went in for a 3D ultrasound and was fine, what they were originally seeing was shadows (this is common if you are overweight).
As for your Dr, CHANGE DOCTORS!!! Even in the middle of a preganancy. There is no excuse for you not being able to ask him a question. Do you really want the first person that ever touches your child and is responsible for them making it safely into this world to be an a-- with an attitude problem???

Just because they only saw one kidney on the ultrasound doesn't mean your baby only has one kidney. It means they could only see one with the ultrasound. What they will probably do is either send you to a perinatologist for more testing or wait until the baby is born and then send him to a specialist for testing. A human can live with one kidney. It's not a death sentence. You didn't say how many weeks pregnant you are, but 14oz sounds ok, as long as you are around 18wks if you were 22wks I might be worried that he was on the small side.(At least for one of my kids)

Your baby will be fine. You only need one kidney to survive. My father was born with one kidney and was just fine.
And if you aren't comfortable with asking your doctor questions I suggest to get a new one. You should be comfortable with your doctor.
Good luck and don't let it worry you.
