the worst bust in the history of all sports. Anyone agree? The Colorado Rockies gave Hampton, a starting pitcher, an 8 year - 121 million dollar contract good from 2001-2008. He wound up only pitching 2 years in Colorado and 3 years in Atlanta, and has been under contract, but hurt, the past 2 years with Atlanta, and the Braves have him for next season also. He made slightly over 15 million per season, and in the 7 years since he signed that contract, Hampton's record is, 53 wins and 48 losses, WOW, that is an average of 7.5 wins per season, at 15 million per, so slightly over 2 million per win. WHAT A FREAKING BUST, you agree?

His is not a case of being a bust as much as being a clutz and injury prone. He was used and abused by Houston and the Mets before going to Colorado, he has had nothing but injuries int he time period since signing with Colorado going to Florida and then to Atlanta. He has not lost his ability to pitch just his ability to stay healthy, there is a difference between the two. I would not put him in a bust category, a bust forgets how to get people out, a clutz can't get out of the way of the cat...that is Mikey's problem!

Kevin Brown got a huge contract too. He was hurt for a good deal of the contract and then when he was pitching for the Yankees he was getting smacked around the yard. What about Carl Pavano. He hasn't even pitched one year with the Yanks. I think he got a 4 yr deal at like 10 million a season. Mark Prior and Kerry Wood were supposed to be the saviors in Chicago. Since 2003 when the Cubs lost to the Marlins in the NLCS, these guys haven't done anything but take up space on the DL. It just goes to show you that you never know what to expect with pitchers. Just when you think they have a proven track record, they blow out.

The worst thing is to give a player $121 million and he forgets how to play the game. Not nearly as bad is a player that gets $121 million and injuries do him in, and that is where Hampton finds himself.

Colorado has ruined many a fine pitcher, especially breaking ball pictures. I think that it has gotten better since they started putting the baseballs in a humidor.
