Me and some friends were up last night chatting about life and the subject of 4 play came up, and one of my friends wondered where did that saying come from and how it got started, but most of all why that name????

It's a shortened version of the word 'foreplay' which is the build-up to having sex. In other words the kissing, fondling, stroking etc that goes on before the 'Act'. It's just a way of saying it in, say, text language like the Annie Lennox song 'Nothing compares 2 U.'
