Dont let them do one. Its not needed.

They would just check your cervix, but they can do it later when you're showing signs of labor.

Before then they can harm your cervix, give you an infection, and even cause preterm labor.

Different practices start checking at different times and if you have risk factors for an early delivery or are currently experiencing contractions. What they have you do is get undressed from the waist down and usually with your knees bent, they have you put your heels together and let your knees fall apart. Then they put on a glove and if they are nice they'll use the lube, if not it hurts like heck. Then they reach up and check the cervical position. Is it high, or is it low and the length. Is the cervix long and closed or is it short and open. Then if it is open they see how dialated you are. It feels about like an internal exam usually does at any gynecological visit. It's pretty straight forward.

Usually they will check for dilation. It's quick and painless and might give you a better idea what to expect within the next few days. If nothing is happening, than keep waiting.

If you are dilating (like I was at 36 weeks) it is nice to know that you should stay close to home. I started taking my mom to work with me in case I needed help. I have very short labors (like 1-2 hours total) and I was worried about getting to the hospital in time. Good luck to you.

Around 36 weeks is when they typically test for Group B Strep. It's an outer swab of your vagina and rectum, and is a very important, quick test.

This is likely what they're going to do...some docs will check for dilation this early...it's not dangerous for them to do so. Your OB would not risk anything with you as previously suggested.

Group B Strep (GBS) is vital to know about, and if you test positive, they will just give you IV antibiotics during labour, prior to delivery, so GBS does not get passed to your baby. It's very common to be positive...I was with my second pregnancy. Check out the link below.

they check to see if you are dialated, efaced ect. they want to see so they can make a birth plan, if you are 3 cm and 80 percent effaced they are going to tell you to come to the hospital asap when you go into labor. If you are closed and 0 percent they may tell you to stay home till contractions are 5 minutes apart. they are just checking to see how far you may be from labor!

You should ask your DOCTOR or his nurse what they do. While the exam is pretty similar it may differ some from one doctor to another.
