Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you."
"Freedom is not merely the opportunity to do as one pleases; neither is it merely the opportunity to choose between set alternatives. Freedom is, first of all, the chance to formulate the available choices, to argue over them -- and then, the opportunity to choose."
good luck..

No stories, no philosophy of life ... sorry!
Freedom and independence these days are connected to money.
You want to stay true to yourself. Be the lovely person you are deep inside.
But you can't, because all your neighbours hate you and want to destroy your values.
So you get money.
You can bribe them, but some will keep coming back for more.
You can go into Politics and push your opinion.
Yeah. Good luck!
Or you can buy a small island where you can be totally free and independent and do whatever it is that makes you happy.
Impossible dream! But better than the other options.
In the meantime, all you can do is follow your own guiding light and hope you can make some difference somehow.
Never give up, but expect a lot of heartbreaks along the way.

I don't think that true freedom can be somehow given to us. It is not the 'outside' factors that make us free or independent, that's the way of thinking, the way we feel ourselves within ourselves. I remember very interesting thoughts of Ekzuperi about it: if you give all the freedom of the world to a stone, what it's going to do with it? it has no aim, no dream to realise... Freedom is something you earn and win while searching for your dream. If your dream is to be independent from everything and everyone - you will never get free, being caught in to the prison of your own fear to be dependant. Freedom and independence are two very different things that is why. If we talk politics - I know many countries who are "very independent" but far from being free. And if you remember a Buddhist monk, who you find to be free in every way is actually quite dependent on the community he lives in. Freedom is the way of thinking, it is the way of finding yourself and your dreams. But when it becomes a dream itself - it's never attainable.

I think freedom is a state of mind.... you can feel very trapped even when you are physically free, unrestrained, not locked up!
Freedom and independence are dependent on your state of health. Mental health and physical health.
Bureaucracy can make you feel very "un" free! Tangled up in stupid rules, red tape, regulations.....
Everyone's a prisoner.... but some of us are in cells with windows, when some are there without.

I am the slave with a free mind to choose whom do I serve.
I serve my customers for money and the feeling of being helpfull and my loved ones for rewarding friendship.
By serving only those I choose gives me independence from others, expecting my services for peanuts.

To answer that question, you have to define "Freedom" and "Independence" If you want a root answer - Freedom is an ideal which can be stiven for but never achieved, Independence quite simply does not exist.
