I have a thing for languages. I mean, I'm totally addicted to them. So went to this polyglot party and there was this Polish girl there who started challenging me, going from one language to the next and when I kept up with her through several of them she said in a condescending tone(that I'm sure I didn't take wrong because others at the party had similar stories), "You're pretty smart for a black guy.", to which I replied, "Well, you're not so stupid...for a Polish girl, by the way, how's your German?"( I said this in German). And the room went quiet. My date said I was rude but I think my response was par for the course.

I don't think you were rude either. She was rude to you first. I wonder if you could of said the same thing without using the word stupid though, that must of been what made it rude to other ppl.

"maybe , so are you , for a polish girl" , no stupid, just saying the same thing she said .:)

You did not say anything rude. At most, you were as rude as her saying "not so stupid, for a black guy". And the whole room went quiet? Man, you were at the wrong party, forget all of them.

in your description it was par for the course.
however, you must have said it loud enough that others heard. they may have not heard what she said to you. you don't have to decide who was right and who was wrong. rude is a label. think more about how it made everyone feel, including you. Being right is not the path to happiness.

You did the right thing! Some people seem to get upset when black people respond in kind to negative comments. You go guy!!!

It sounds to me that she was terribly insulting, way beyond rude. Personally I think your response was spot-on. Maybe she was just trying to be funny, but she failed.

Well you could of taken her comment as a racist remark so I think your comment was quite fitting, I didn't think it was rude, if anything she's rude.

You were rude, but she asked for it.
sarcasm is a fantastic communication tool.

She opened the can of worms - you merely replied in kind. Don't sweat it.
