If you want more legit better paying jobs, go with getting an agent. You can get spec commercials and student films and things like that on your own, but getting into bigger better things will take an agent. The agent is your link to Breakdown Services which is where all casting directors put out the list of roles they are currently casting every single day. Without them you don't have access to that. Actorsaccess.com only gives you a very watered down version of that. You can get some things and build a resume there, but you really don't have access to wht they do. If you ever saw the real breakdowns, you'd see what I mean.
And yeah, commericals and ads pay for some people to buy homes, they're no small change so don't treat them as such. Real national commercials can pay uku billion bucks (just a saying) so take some classes and show the profession some respect.
If you're underage you absolutely need your parents support because you can't do anything without their ok not to mention transportation and cash for headshots, etc. You can build your resume like I mentioned through roles on backstage.com and actorssaccess.com If you live in a n area where those sites don't have much for you then try looking up your state's film alliances, commissions, etc. Do a web search for your state name and the word film. Those sites have info on classes you can take and casting too for projects filming locally. It's worth checking into.
As for agents, don't bother until you're actually ready. If you've been training for a while and you havea godo resume then look here: http://www.sag.org/sagWebApp/application?origin=page1.jsp&event=bea.portal.framework.internal.refresh&pageid=AgentInformation
good luck

No you do not have to go to California to get into acting or to find a good acting school. Usually in every state there are some pretty good acting schools. If your really serious about Acting Schools, you should find a good Acting Agent. Some of the really good ones are now retired Producers who start up with their spare time courses. Just like Modeling check out their past experiences and what they are known for...My daughter was taught by a gentleman named Phillip Karr in Orlando Florida, his wife is now running the show. But he worked in Hollywood for many years as well as New York and the students had the chance to actually go to LA and meet Producers and so on.....Wish you all the best....

theatre doc is right (of course).
commercials and modeling aren't really small stuff. And you will not find anything good without an agent or manager. sure, maybe once a year theres a good audition that u may hear about and somehow get to go to, but agents and managers get a special list of auditions that the general public does not have acess to. that's why you need to find a manager or agent.

Both your previous answers are correct as far as they go-but they do not touch on the real world. First real world fact: commercials and ad modeling are not "small stuff" but highly paying prizes to be sought after. You cant get these kinds of jobs without an agent. Second real world fact: unless you are drop dead handsome, no agent is going to be interested in you. Third real world fact until you are 18, your parents have to consent to any professional work that you do, and apply to agents for you. Get more info by reading my profile and writing to me at my aol address.

go too www.actingbiz.com, that website has a ton of articles that can answer any question you possibly have about Acting. It also has mulitple listings of auditions. another good website to check out is moviex.com, through that site you can set up your Acting resume, and headshots for agents to see plus you can find out about auditions in your area and how to become a movie extra. If your looking for an good agent than try actingland.com. all those sites should be very helpful.

Commercials are not "small stuff," as you call it. If you have never taken acting classes, find an acting teacher in your city, or, call the theatre department of the University in your city and ask for the names of acting teachers.
