With all due respect; while I can't imagine going back to the days of Butter Churns; hand crank Ice Cream makers; pedal sewing machines; your Q reminded me of OLD school science classes where in we had a wheel/disk that had a crank and fixed to it were plates/ wires/ whatever and to crank it the disk was surrounded by opposing hardware; and probably water and sulphuric acid in a container that eventually created some minor electrictity. It reminded me of the OLD Frankenstein movies.

I guess I have to wonder "WHY" for one thing; though I mean no offense; and one answer states they can be purchased; as can the Shake Em Up flashlights.

$20 or less for the technology and material is probably an under estimate for a diy? beyond that I wonder how much electricity you want to generate?

if you want something practical, go scrounge a generator from an old junked car. attach a crank and wire it to a 12 volt battery.
