Since I have Thanksgiving for my family at my house I don't start decorating for Christmas until after Thanksgiving. If you don't have guests for Thanksgiving I would start anytime in mid November.
Nobody understands how much work it is to make your Christmas decorations look their best. It takes me at least 3 days to decorate my 9' Christmas tree. After that I do a smaller tree and the rest of the house.
Start as early as you need to so you can enjoy the holidays!

My husband and I have a collection about the same size as yours. We also have a Halloween village. As soon as the Halloween village comes down we start the planning process. We plan out where the buildings and large accessories will go on paper first. This cuts down on set up time. We also have the tables we use as a base set up before Thanksgiving. That way Thanksgiving weekend we can start putting the buildings up immediately. With both of us helping we usually have it complete in a week.
I also start winter decorating the week before Thanksgiving. Nothing overtly Christmas, but snowmen and such. This helps to get everything up in time to enjoy it.

I don't start any decorating until December 1. I think even American Thanksgiving is too early, but that's just me. I agree with your family - you don't have to have it all up right away! Put up a few of the buildings/accessories each night for two weeks or so and you'll have everything up by early December. There's no need to spend a whole weekend doing it, and even early December is plenty of time.

I think the best time to start decorating for Christmas is on Thanksgiving. The is usually the time when people start putting up their Christmas trees. I know those Christmas village collections take forever. They used to have beautiful ones at Carson Pirie Scott but I didn't like the selection last year. I'm going to buy a Christmas Village Collection and put one up this year. I have a few pieces for my Halloween village collection but I want a bigger one. Me and my boyfriend just got our first apartment together so I'm doing all the decorating!

I try to have my decorations up by the 1st of December at the latest. It doesn't take me terribly too long to put everything up, usually a day or two.
Village wise, it takes me a few hours to put everything together as I only have a dozen buildings to take out and a decent amount of accessories.
I've already started to buy new pieces for my village this year, just this weekend I got a second train set.

I have a kazillon of those Dept. 56 bldgs, and would love to sell them! I no longer have the room for them. I know they take a lot of time, so start early, your family will enjoy the little houses once they are up, I'd bet!

OMG where do you put that many buildings? LOL. I have about five plus accessories/people (all of which I've handpainted myself) and I usually put it out the first weekend of December. It only takes me about 20-30 minutes though. :)
