Three thousand dollars is a lot of money to just give up on.
You may want to check the laws in your area, some states have minimum and maximum amounts for small claims cases, while others will not even try cases that are less then five thousand dollars.
You can contact some lawyers in your area, many will do an initial consultation for free, and you will have some idea if this is even worth pursuing.
Good luck, I hope that you get some helpful answers about your legal rights in this case.
I had a couple of family members that went through a similar situation, one finally received the money that they were owed, after the contractor had been brought up on multiple charges from former employees and clients.
The second person did not end up getting a settlement, as the former employer filed bankruptcy and then left the country and has not been tracked down in about six years.

You may want to check the statute of limitations (SOL) in your state. Many states SOL is only 3 or 4 years.
Before you file in small claims, be sure you have documentation that he owes you this money. You're going to need more than just your work. You need contracts, time sheets, etc. If you don't have hard proof, you might as well forget about it.

If he is like most contractors he is broke
Consider this before you sue him - you may go through a lot of pain to get a judgement you can never collect on

Depending on the rules of your state, "a few years ago" may be too long to still be able to collect. It may be a 2 or 4 year limit.

Take him to small claims court. Depending on your state, the damages you can claim might be limited to 2 grand, but its better than nothing. You should also report this crook to the better business bureau.
