I liked both but in different ways. Fear and Loathing's purpose was to entertain (and who doesn't want to look at Johnny Depp?), while Buffalo Roam seemed to be more realistic and accurate.
Probably the most valuable role Murray ever had.

Johnny Depp studied Hunter for sooooo long (he actually lived with him to get into character before the filming) and PLUS he paid for Hunter to have his final wish of getting shot out of "the" cannon...
He seemed to carry out the true "wacky" nature of Hunter better than Murray but I think they both did a fantastic job.
Depp wins but both were very well done as far as acting skills are concerned!

I totally agree with Vixen! Johnny Depp was awesome in "Fear & Loathing"! Nobody can capture a bizarre personality better than Johnny.

I agree a little bit with answer #1, but I think Depp has the edge because of the real life friendship they shared. Depp molded the character out of how he knew Dr. HST.

I love Bill, but I have to give it to John.
WTBR was a very disjoint film. It is also dated in style. I think Peter Boyle kind of stole the show.
FLLV was a much better vehicle, so it is almost unfair, but pound for pound I go with Depp.

Bill Murray, hands down. He was an invited guest when HST's remains were shot from the "Gonzo" cannon. I think that pretty much sums it up.
