If you already have experience sewing, you should have no trouble making a quilt. There are really two issues here - making a quilt, and putting photos on fabric. You can buy iron on transfer paper at most office supply stores, but that really isn't the best way to go. You run the risk of the photos fading, peeling, and creasing when you put them on. You also have to be careful about reversing the photos if there is any lettering in the photos. Instead, get (or make) fabric that is treated to go through your inkjet printer. There are several different brands, and you can find them at most fabric and craft stores. Read the directions before you buy because some require heat setting, and others are not washable. The sheets have a paper backing so they go through your printer easily. The biggest negative is the price - they can cost as much as $15 for just 3 or 4 sheets. If you are only doing a few photos (print several onto a page), then you should be fine using the pretreated sheets. If you're going to use more, you can treat your own fabric by using a product called Bubble Jet Set. Iron freezer paper to the back of the fabric to help it go through the printer.
Now for sewing the quilt. You can do this very easily by just printing the photos, cutting the photo fabric into squares or rectangles, sewing borders onto each photo, then trimming them to be the same size and sewing them together. Use all the same fabric for the borders, or use different fabrics for each one. You can make it as complicated or simple as you wish. Keep in mind that it will need to be either quilted or tied to fasten the layers together with the batting in between. If you aren't familiar with quilting, you really should check out a beginner book just to get an idea of basic construction methods.
This is not necessarily a fast project. It could take you several weeks or more to finish, depending on how much time you had to work on it. You'd be wise to start right away. After all, there's no penalty if you get it done early.

If you make stuff all the time I'm sure you could do it! I would start now and if you finish early than there is less to stress about as the holiday approaches. One extra idea: if you are putting the photos on squares of fabric and attaching the square add some squares without pictures in between to add visual interest. You could make these squares out of old concert T shirts or other fabrics that have special meaning to him. Good Luck!

I think it would look great, make sure you lay out your photos first in a pattern, then you will have some idea of the out come of the blanket. I have seen this done with different size photos, set in the material. Pick out his favorite colors, this will also make it nice for him. I don't know how fast you sew, but it it not to soon to start this, and then you would be sure it is done. Good luck.

I think that would be cute! As long as you make sure that the fabric is colorfast & heatsafe (anything washable, like cotton, should be OK), you could print copies of your pictures onto t-shirt transfer paper and iron it onto the cloth. I'd probably start ASAP, that way if something comes up, you're not rushing to finish it :).

You will need to get started now. If you make a "throw" size quilt you should be able to have it done by Christmas!
I hope you have fun making it!
