There are two ifs here:

1. If your first born ( and only biological) child was born with the genetic disorder cystic fibrosis and any other children you have have a 1 in 4 chance of also being born with it? www.cff.org

2. You had a difficult pregnancy with uncontrolled diabetes, disabling fears, terrible carpel tunnel, and swelling so bad that I couldn't stand or walk for the last 2 months for more than 5 minutes at a time.

What if both were true? Would you consider another pregnancy?

This is a hard one. I could deal with #2....because that's all stuff that happens to me and the results are worth it. But #1....I don't know if I want my child to suffer or even risk it. But 1 in 4...that's not very bad. He has 3/4 chance of being okay....so I think I would go for it. My thought is if God didn't want you to have a child he wouldn't let you. I believe all children are a gift from God.

Answer to question #1 Yes, I did it. The disorder my son has causes brain tumors and tumors to grow in other main organs of the body and can cause retardation and death. Luckily for us, he has the milder form and hasn't thus far shown any other signs than the tumor he had removed almost 2 years ago(he'll have to be monitored his whole life). My older brother died from the disease only I didn't know that it was inherited. I thought it was some kind of fluke. For us, if we have a male child he has a 25% chance of getting the disorder and if we have a girl a 1-2% chance. The way I see it, God wanted that child there and whatever problems it has, well, we'll take em on as they happen or don't happen. You've still got a 75% chance of a healthy normal child. That's better than the lotto and look how much people spend on that!

The 2nd question. Yes, BUT go in knowing your risks and be prepared should it come up. I had severe pre-eclampsia with my first child and so when I got pregnant again I went into it expecting that it could very well happen again. I was prepared and it didn't happen, but it COULD have. You have to ask yourself if it DOES happen can you handle it with everything else you've got going on taking care of your other child and all that comes with having CF. If you've got a great support network, and you are willing to take the risks go for it! If it's meant to happen God will let it happen and if it's not then he won't! IT also never hurts to pray about it if you are unsure. Sometimes the answers to our prayers are fast and direct and other times we get our answers by being put in just the right spot at just the right time to meet certain people and things we see them experience, but he always answers! Good luck!

I'm not saying others shouldn't get pregnant but I would not want to. I think traumatic pregnancies can leave a women with severe psychological problems especially if she were to have another child with cystic fibrosis and put the blame on herself.

I just couldn't do it so I probably wouldn't consider it. I'd just love my first born and possibly look into adopting other disabled children if time and money would permit.

Children are so precious and even if the second one were born with cystic fibrosis, I would love it just the same. And if I had enough help and support from my family, I would probably go for it as long as my chances of carrying the pregnancy through full term were good.

If I had no support and the chances were slim that I could not carry the second pregnancy to full term - then no.

#1 if my first born was born with a disability and the odds were greater of having another with a disability, no~ I would not want to put a child in that situation of never knowing what normal is.

#2 if those symptoms were present only in pregnancy and went away after birth, I would do it again in a heart beat~ the miracle of life is so precious and seeing a baby brought to life is a miracle.

Theres too many other factors.

Me personally, I dont want to have anymore children because the world is too unstable and effed up to add more innocence to it.

We want to adopt, since so many perfectly healthy children would otherwise grow up without the love and stimulation needed and provided by a family.

I probably wouldnt TRY to get pregnant (thats where we are right now) but if it happened it would be wonderful. Even in your situation. 9 months of misery is worth every moment of a childs life, in my book.

Personally I wouldn't as the risks to the childs health 25% chance of a horrible disease and the uncontrolled diabetes.
However, some people so desperately want children that they will take those risks to their health and also that of the child, so that is only my opinion.

I don't think so. You sound like you have two beautiful children now so why put yourself through another difficult pregnancy. Cherish the ones you have and learn and grow from them. They can have all of your attention and not divided among another sibling.

To some extent it would depend on my spouse and what type of relationship we had. Also, finances would play a part, to a lessor extent- for medical care, and counselling or whatever was needed to get thru a difficult time. But yes, I would certainly consider it.

Not when there are lots of children to adopt. Why would one want to pass on genetic defects and almost kill themselves doing it?
