We are planning a family trip to Colorado (not sure of city) but am curious about its altitude. I have two small kids (8 year old and 5 year old) and I am curious about its altitude. This would be a first time trip and do not know what to expect.

The major cities in Colorado--Denver, Fort Collins, Grand Junction, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, etc.--aren't high enough in altitude to cause you or your kids any problem.

If you go up in the mountains, you may experience some dizziness, shortness of breath, or flatulence. It tends to be minor, but if symptoms continue or get worse, travel back down to lower altitude. In most areas, you can drive down to a manageable altitude within half an hour or so. I don't think you'll notice the altitude difference, though, below about 11,000 feet.

You will probably notice the air is drier, so you'll want to stock up on bottled water and drink plenty of it. You may also want to keep lip balm on hand for all of you, as well as sunscreen.

Have a great time in Colorado!

What are you looking to do? Denver is a really great city to spend time in. There's a lot to do there, it's got anything a major city will have. On the other hand there is plenty of outdoors stuff to do in Colorado especially skiing and hiking. Colorado Springs is a great little city where you could find lodging, have access to restaurants and things and still be close to outdoor attractions.

Altitude in Colorado ranges from 2000 or so feet to over 14,000 at the peak of the tallest mountains. Most people find themselves a little short of breath but alititude impact can be more serious. Most kids don't notice a thing and in fact are energized by it.

Denver is 5280 feet. You just have to take it slow the first few days until you get used to the altitude and be sure to drink plenty of water

The kids will be fine. You might not make it, but the kids will.
