Has anyone had this problem before; a small amount of water got on the armrest, so I sponged it with a tissue lightly, and the leather just started peeling off.

Once the water was dry, I then got the leather treatment and dabbed a bit on and massged gently with a cloth and the same thing happened.

Its revealved a darker leather underneath - what is the 'top coating' of the arm rest that I have peeled off??? Is it repairable??

yes it happens and it horrible, it is repairable but there going to charge you a bit plus you either go get it at the dealer. the dealer is costly or go to an auto upholstery shop. the upholstery shop can replace it with something better and its cheaperr than the dealer.

I swapped my seat center inserts on my Acura w/ vinyl due to wear and tear as well which was cheaper, looks incredibly similar and has held up much better than my leather components. It's easy to clean, hasn't cracked the 5 years I've ridden in it, and you can usually dye it to match very easily. Also, it is water resistant which helps if you spill a lot on it. So yes, it is very repairable.

Most likely the leather is deteriorating.

Take the car to an auto upholstery shop and have them see what can be done, You may need to have the armrest recovered.

Sadly the leather on many Acura's is pretty cheap and doesn't wear well like with some cars. I had my TL for two years and even though I am gentle with a car, it really didn't wear well at all. I was glad to be rid of it, frankly.
