My baby was 9lbs 10 oz at birth because i got gestational diabetes while i was pregnant. He eats about 6- 8 oz at a time of formula and it's about every 2 hrs except during the night he can go about 4-6 hrs w/out eating. He is 10 weeks old and weighs 14 lbs and some oz. The doctor said he proportioned right but my husband sometimes says we shouldn't feed him so much cause he doesnt want him to get fat and be a fat kid. We have a 6 year old who is very skinny but was 7lbs 10 oz at birth . I have a little brother who was 9lbs something and he is a toothpick now ........

what do u think? Deprive my baby of food when he's hungry? or let him eat?

honey honey honey.....your baby is fine...and weight shouldn't be an issue anyway unless he is grossly overweight...but he is not he is healthy hes not going to be fat or a fat child...he will lose all the baby fat when he becomes active...weight at birth doesn't always mean he will have that problem when hes older...believe me I know its lifestyle and eating habits later on that give the weight problem attention...I know you are bored at work and ask these questions...but I think you really know the answer...just raise your kids and love them no matter what and don't make weight an issue and he won't when he gets older

There is some correlation between gestational diabetes and childhood obesity (see the link for an interesting article).

However, the doctor will monitor your baby's growth and no sane person would put a 10 week old on a "diet". You may need to be more careful as you shape his eating habits, but that's not a bad thing anyway.

Childhood obesity is caused by a lifestyle, not by how much formula the child was fed as a baby. Babies have a natural ability to regulate their necessary caloric intake when being exclusively breastfed/bottle fed.

If you are concerned about your baby growing up to be an obese kid, then I would make sure that you keep candy, soda pop, buttery popcorn, unhealthy snacks, etc out of your house. Stock the kitchen with only healthy snacks like fruit, veggies, whole grains and dairy (yogart, string cheese). Also, limit or eliminate the tv watching and nitendo playing, and encourage lots of outdoor play! Spend time with your children when they're outside to make sure that they're actually being active.

Keep feeding the formula as needed to meet your baby's needs. Get your questions about your baby answered by your doctor.

If your baby wasnt hungry he wouldnt take the bottle. My son was 7'6 at birth and at 12 wks he weighed 16 lbs his weight gain slowed down at 6 months he weighed 20 lbs now he is 5 and he is a thin boy. Let your baby eat what he wants for now.

I can't imagine, that seriously, you would worry about this to the point where you would even consider letting a baby go hungry.

My son was huge! He was breastfed and still was the fattest little thing ever! But I have never worried about what that will do to him in the unknown future. I do know that he will run around our backyard, play some sports, dance, who knows, but he will exercise and he will learn how to eat correctly from me and my husband.

Worrying about baby's weight at 10 weeks is dumb. Feed the baby. Love the baby, keep the baby safe.
Forget about weight. The doctor will tell you if he isn't healthy.

All of my kids were fat babies usually 16 to 18 pounds by 12 weeks of age. They are all skinny and wear slims. Except my smallest boy he was a skinny baby his clothes fell off him and now he wears huskies. I beleive you need to feed a hungry baby depriving him could have bad concequences like rotten teeth and brittle bones from him not getting enough nutrition.

Please do not withhold food from your little guy. Babies self-regulate. Obesity comes in later through a combination of genetics and bad eating habits.

If you stick with formula through to six months (or introduce solids earlier if directed by your pediatrician) and feed the baby what he wants and needs, he will be fine, not obese. Channel your concern into working with him when he transitions to solids and feed him healthy food choices. He is just a big baby.

Are you for real? Why in the world woudl you put your INFANT son on a diet? Are you insane? Babies eat because they need to - they are hungry! Why don't you try starving your husband and see how he likes it...And while you're at it, why don't you go without food for even considering such a thing!

Never starve your baby! Shame on your husband! My son is 4 months old and almost 21 lbs. All doctors and friends have told me that it will melt away when he starts crawling. You'd be suprised at how many people have big babies, and they turn out just fine.

you should let him eat when he wants..dont take his feed times away, your are depriving him of the vitamins and minerals for healthy bones and good brain development. he will lose all that weight once he becomes active, eg, rolling, crawling etc. you should be happy you have a very healthy baby! my nephew was VERY FAT! but once he started walking and running he lost it all. hes a match stick now!
