the green dot means that's the helmet with the headset inside. NFL teams are only allowed one helmet headset and its marked with a green dot on the back of the helmet.

It's only on one player on each team usually the QB, meaning that they have a microphone and earpiece to communicate with the coaches. Any player can wear it but only the QB makes sense. If a second QB comes onto the field (like for a trick play) they cannot be wearing a mike/earpiece, if the 1st QB is still wearing his on the play.

Yeah I saw that....there were tons of green dots in the stands of the Denver - SD game....oh wait, maybe that was vomit splatter from us poor Broncos fans.
But there were so many green dots on the field during the 49ers - Ravens game that the whole field looked green. It was creepy.
