Yes and No. We elect officials on a term by term basis, and they do whatever they can to keep their constituents happy during their term (majority). But there are some that have greater interests than themselves (minority).

Hasn't even bothered making a pretence of doing so for decades.
The American government works for the short-term interests of its OWNERS (which is NOT we, the people of the United States).

Yes, the American govt does act in the best long term interests of its' people.
So do politicians, however their definition of "long term" is until the next election.

I think so. It's easy to say it isn't because change takes time, and good policy doesn't happen all at once. We are looking at a snapshot of the current state.
