I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado, 6-cyl. I go to turn the key and it seems that the starter is getting enough power, assuming from the strong and loud clicking sound, but it isn't turning on. Also the battery gage isn't moving when I turn the key, but all the other gages are. (gas, oil, temp gages) Thanks anyone!

Clean your battery poles,. You can use baking soda and lime. Don't pump gas, if you do that the engine won't turn on because it's fuel injected. Wait until the the flashing security light goes off and try again. The loud clicking noise is indication that is lock into security.

mostly all the other answers are helpful to your problem -- if you need to move the truck to have the starter re-placed sometimes you can tap on the starter housing case and the one-time start will get you to a repair store and no wrecker tow charge .. use a good size hammer and tap with enough force to jar the insides of the starter motor----- just shake it and don't break it and this is a two man job ----- tap while turning the key .. good luck because this works sometimes but not always ...

If all you're connections are clean and tight then you've got a start solenoid problem. you didn't tell us make or model of the truck so we could give you more info on where to find your solenoid. GMs are on the starter. Fords are on the inside of the passenger side fender.

BEST ANSWER! (10 points,please!):

I had the EXACT same problem, many times, and the clicking idicated that the battery wasn't giving the starter enough power to turn it over!

Clean the battery posts/cable ends (ck the strater cable ends, too!), & also ck w. a voltmeter that the battery is fully charged (at least 12 volts should do it).

If it isn't, charge it, & if it won't charge well, replace it, & problem solved!

First check your battery cable connections. take your cables off and see if they're dirty. if they are then clean them real good with a wire brush or somethin hard like that. put the cables back on and ake sure they're on tight and they're making a good connection with your posts. if it still doesnt start take ur battery out and get it tested. this hapened to me a couple of months ago and it turned out i had a bad battery. good luck man.

check your battery connections real good first on it, if that's not it its possible you either have a dead battery or a starter going bad,if its the starter sometimes it will start if you get someone to jump start it,its possible you just have a bad battery or a very loose connection on it,good luck with it.
