Nothing is free.

There are government programs to help those whose income is at or below a certain percentage of the poverty line. Ask your local department of job and family services what you might qualify for.

There are grants and scholarships available for college, also.

"Free money" also comes (in a sense) in the form of coupons. When you save money on something you would otherwise have paid full price for, that's "free money." If you buy it only because you had a coupon, and would never have purchased it otherwise, that's making the company happy, but not really helping your pocketbook.

Some good sites on money saving ideas are:

Also, you can get some items for free that you would otherwise have had to pay for, if you participate in your local Freecycle. The items will be used, not new, and you will have to pick them up if you are the chosen recipient. It can still be a very helpful resource.

Other than grants and scholarships which have been discussed, the only other thing I can think of is investment. You'd have to choose wisely, but if you do, it's as good as free money because you don't really have to work for it. Of course you'll have to know when the best time to sell is, so you might need a good broker for advice.
