you send letters with a baseball card inside to your players with a self addressed stamped envelope and they'll sign and mail it back.

Listen, I did this all summer. Retired players usually require you send money for their charity for an autograph. I do not knw where you find information on this stuff and how much money you spend. Make sure you write a letter too!

Players that will sign:
Pat Neshek http://eteamz.active.com/patneshek/index.cfm?
This is his website and if you become a member (free), you can access the message boards where people tell of their successes. He ALWAYS signs if you include the SASE and prefers if you write letters short like "Please sign my card. Thanks!" Awesome guy!- Twins

Juan Pierre: He sent one back to me but not my sister)-Dodgers
Aaron Rowand: (He takes a while)- Phillies
A.J. Pierzynski: (GREAT!)- White Sox
Tadahito Iguchi- Phillies
Dan Wheeler-Devil Rays
Paul Maholm-Pirates
Adrian Gonzalez- Padres
Bruce Bochy-Giants manager
Mike Rabelo-Tigers
Joe Nathan-Twins
Orlando Hudson- D'backs
Many Minor Leaguers

Don't send in the off-season! They are not forwwarded to players! They might get them in April but I am not sure. Pat Neshek has another address you can send it to!

If you're interested in his autograph, Mike Sweeney is great about signing a baseball card or whatever and sending it back. He's the only guy I've ever sent anything to, but I had the card back with a handwritten letter from him within 3 weeks.

I've never ordered through mail, but you might want to double check the source by seeing if they have reputable references or are ran out of a legitimate place of business like a hobby store. A professional will have references available, but I know people who have ordered autographed items and they have had no problems.

Ryan sells his autograph to benefit his nonprofit Nolan Ryan Foundation. Rates can be found here: http://nolanryanfoundation.stores.yahoo.net/polonperit.html

Upshot, you're not likely to get a freebie, but you never know your luck.
