a nobleman had an annual income of 5,000-25,000 pounds, which is equal to $800,000-$4,000,000/year today. So Mr. Darcy was quite a catch!

10,000 pounds is roughly $15,000 today, and by 18th century standards, that would have been like being a millionaire if he made 10,000 pounds per year. If you consider that at the beginning of the 20th century, a loaf of bread cost a nickel and a brand new car cost about $500, you can only imagine how relatively inexpensive everything was 200 whole years earlier. Mr. Darcy would probably be at least as wealthy as someone like Brad Pitt these days. Maybe mot as wealthy as Bill Gates or Donald Trump, but definitely as rich as a movie star.
