A century is a span of 100 years. We are currently in the 21st century. The reason it's the 21st century and not the 20th century (even though our year numbers begin with 20__) is that the first century consisted of years 0-99 A.D.

100 years. When a century is referred to as the 18th century, keep in mind that the first century of the millennium is 1 AD (or CE) to 100 AD (or CE) so the number is a year ahead. For example 1775 is the 18th century. It is often argued when a century begins either the 01 year or the 00 year (like 2001 or 2000). I use the 01 year because there is no year 0 so to keep continuity I always refer 01 the beginning of the century.
