You'd probably get alot more answers if you posted this in the spirituality section. Modern day witches are mostly made up of various "earth based" religions, including wicca. Many people practicing these religions do not like the connotation witch, whereas others embrace it. Contrary to popular belief, witches to not worship the devil, actually most of them don't even believe in a devil or in a hell. Modern spells and magick also tend to be a little different than our storybooks would tell, most spells are closer to prayers than to "eye of toad, ghoul's scream, child tears.." recipes we tend to think of. In fact, if you would like to learn more about what modern day spell books look like, just do a search for BOS or book of shadows. This is a diary that many witches keep of their spells. For the most part, I just think witches are misunderstood, wicca and other earth based religions are no worse than any other. I myself am a christian and don't follow their beliefs, so if you want a more in depth explanation, you should ask a witch.

I am assuming that when you say "Witches today" you are speaking of the modern idea of witches rather than the wicked witch of the west type! I am Wicca which is not to say that I am a typical witch since there are many varieties of us. Witch is associated with those who cast spells and make potions, many of us do that too, but primarily we are a religion, and being somewhat eclectic my studies are Correllian, Druid, Celtic, American Indian. I am a healer, councilor, priestess( I perform handfastings ) and crafter. I am a mother, wife, I work at a grocery store and a hospital. I am a baker and want to open a tea shop someday. I am like everyone else you might run into. So I will bid you a great day and hope this helps! Blessed Be!

There are all kinds of Witches, from different cultures, nations and traditions. They are not all the same, nor do they believe in the same things or have the same goals.
There are African Witches, Celtic Witches, Baltic Witches, Afro-Cuban Witches, Aztlan Witches, Appalachian Witches, Bayou Witches and Native American Witches, to name a few. I haven't met all the types of Witches as of yet, so I cannot give a full opinion of them, give me a few dozen years.
Most of the nay Sayers that will answer this question have a very narrow view of Witches, mostly because they are too lazy to do any real research on the issue.

I think some are funny, some are not. Just like your average person. They just have different beliefs. Part of it honestly depends on why they got into witchcraft. (Wicca just being a branch of paganism). If they decided to be a witch because they thought it was going to be like Charmed or Harry Potter (honestly, there are people like that out there) then they're barking up the wrong tree. If they are a practicing witch because they decided to travel on that path (after much research and learning and soul searching), then you can have a wonderful conversation with them. Same with those who are in a family of witches. Just do a little research and you'll be surprised with what you find. It's not always what some may think it is (i.e. devil worshipping nonsense)

The dictionary says something along the lines of witches are people who practice the art of witchcraft OR people who follow the religion of Wicca. I am a Wiccan which makes me a witch. I do NOT practice witchcraft, I do hold ritual for holidays, and full moons, and new moons, not all but most. I am solitary so I only work with a few of my close Friends who also happen to be Wiccans. we hold normal jobs, we have family's and kids. you could even know a modern day witch and not have a clue. were just people who follow a religion or craft that others have found too different to tolerant in some places. good luck with your project. ~*~Blessed Be~*~

I've been a Witch for 20 years, and I've run into people who are instantly attracted to me and get unreasonably clingy and weird, and I've run into people who are instantly terrified of me and start working against me, even though I've done nothing to them and may not ever talked to them. So that's my $.02 of what people think about witches from the "inside" without ever hearing the word Witch. But as soon as you say the word Witch, you can see from above the variety of beliefs people have - everything from "Witches will put a spell on you for no reason" (hopefully not true Rain!) to "Witches are wonderful people" (yeah well no one's perfect including Witches, I've run into some bad ones). Generally, we have ethics, we believe in karma, we are nice folks trying to do good, we believe in Gods and Goddesses from historical mythologies, and generally we LOVE to play and laugh and be silly! Hugs all!

I've never believed the old stereotype of pointed hats, broomsticks, warts, etc type of witch actually existed, though I know it's based on some of the "witches" killed in the past (esp the warts part).
Wiccan seems to me to be just another form of religion that has as much validity as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Shintoism, Hinduism, etc.
I've read about some cool witches in fiction--good & bad, too.
Overall, I would say the subject is fascinating.

I'm a practicing Witch of 10+ years and it really varies. I've lost a couple of "friends" when they find out what I do, because I don't exactly introduce myself as "Romy the Witch." In high school I definitely got one or two devout Christians to tell me I was going to hell, but for the most part most people just want to know why. What do I do and why I do it. A few minutes of discussion is really all they're asking, but so many Witches get so defensive. It shows people who really may not know an impatient, bitchy side of us as a whole. For the most part, tho, to answer your question from this side of the fence.... more people are curious rather than standoffish when it comes to me and my faith. Hope that helps and good luck on your project. ^.^

I love witches! ;)
Seriously though, a witch is like anyone else, there are those who are nice and those who are not. You can run into a 'know-it-all' and even a 'fundamentalist' witch. You can just as easily run into one that is compassionate, caring, kind, and willing to share what and who they are with you.
A witch does not have to be Wiccan or prescribe to a specific religious group to be a witch.
