I am doing an assignment for reading The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams and I cannot find whar a merchant sailor is, online.

Merchant sailors (or seamen) are those who work aboard sea vessels for a living, rather than specifically to serve the country, etc

merchant seaman or sailor is one who works in the merchant marines, which means they work on vessels that move cargo mostly, they are not part of a country's defense forces.

My father in law was one of these during WWII. There was some question as to whether these sailors were eligible to be recognized for their service and if they could receive retirement pay and benefits. I don't know for sure about this but I've heard they were considered to be eligible.
