I have an old GO VIDEO DVD recorder and it allows me to record analog 8mm and VHS tapes onto a DVD disk (either DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, or DVD+RW) but my computer doesn't recognize the file when I try to download it. I would like to edit the file with an editing software (I have Nero). Is there some step that I am missing to convert the analog file to a digital file? DVD recorder doesn't allow me to save the file in any format such as MPeg, AVI, WMA, etc. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Why am I able to record onto the DVD disk and play it in my DVD player but I can not read the file on my computer? Is the problem in my DVD recording device (doesn't "rip" the file to DVD) or in my computer (programs not able to read the file?

What you need is a USB capture device. Then you can go from VHS to DVD. You can also go from DVD to DVD. Attach the capture device to a DVD or VHS player and then to the computer. Go from your 8mm film to VHS tape and then to DVD.Try using Movie Maker from Microsoft.com for editing and FX, it is free to download. You can also try a DVD ripping program.

You'll need to get a "DVD Ripper" to convert the DVD you made on the recorder to an MPG or AVI file, then edit that in Nero etc.

Try something like "cloneDVD mobile" that can do it to AVI, or if you can find "Easy VCD" it can do it to MPG (might be EAZY VCD)
