I've often noticed that women over 35 or so who are still unmarried have a really hard time to convince people they meet that they are actually sane and good people. On the contrary, married women or ever divorced women command more respect. This hangover from the days when a single woman was a disorder to society and a disgrace to her family is incredible in this day and age. I think that there are many women now who would love to meet the right guy but in the event that they don't, then they are not willing to settle for less. Alternatively, there are others who are quite contented with the very nice single life they have carved out for themselves. Opinions please!

You're right about the stigma. I could really give a d@mn about other people thinking something is wrong with me for enjoying the single life. I say live your life! Married people have yet to prove to me that it's worth it! Yeah, you have good and bad days, but at least you have your freedom when you're single.

Often, old habits die hard. A woman's place has traditionally been in the home, cooking, cleaning, and raising the kids. With the cost of living continuing to rise, it is not only difficult, but virtually impossible for a woman to stay exclusively in the home. Many women these days opt for the security of having a career and financial stability before even considering "settling down", which they really shouldn't be blamed at all for, since it will most likely require her salary as well to stay afloat. My guess is that a portion of society has not yet realized this fact and pass single women off as either being aloof or a lesbian instead of seeing them as the career minded, independent women they are trying to be.
