I find internal hard drives are much more reliable. They don't get banged around, have a better power supply, run cooler, they aren't unplugged while they are still writing corrupting the file system, etc.

As you need at least 300 GB of backup. Get a 500 GB or larger external hard drive. I always look for one that is rated 5 stars and has a lot of reviews. A 1000GB external hard drive costs almost as much as three 500GB external hard drives.

If you have a home network you might consider adding an old computer on you network and and use it to backup files for all your computers. Install in it one or more 500GB internal hard drives at $110 each or less.

They are pretty much all similar in terms of resilience and speed... as long as they use the same interface. USB2 and firewire are both faster in streaming mode than most disk drives... so the drive is the limiting factor.

Go with whatever your local shop is selling as best value!

Alternatively, spend more and buy a NAS drive and hook it to your router. You can get 500Mb raid protected in a NAS for $200/£200+... or less if you buy a cheap NAS box from hong kong and put two disks of your own into it.

Backup application is greater shield than an exterior no longer basic force. via the way application runs backup immediately, it saves a while. I even have used various backup classes for years, and that i decide to propose reachable Backup, this is basic and robust backup application, and works super.

I would say Maxtor One Touch III.
I have a "mini"; "only 60GB. It connects through the USB ports. I also have a Maxtor Basic, 200 GB. There are bigger ones; check Radio Shack or Circuit City.
Yes, all software included IN the hard drive.
