My mom gave me an old chest of drawers painted a high gloss black (it almost looks like a piano). The paint is in perfect shape--do anyone know a way I can dull down the gloss without stripping the dresser? I would prefer an older, rubbed black finish but any suggestions that will remove some of the sheen would be appreciated.

I've done this by using Paseo which is a liquid sanding product. It dulls the finish without the work of steel wool or sanding.

You should be able to buy a paint deglosser at a home center. Another solution is to use Scotchbrite pads (very fine) to lightly sand the finish. You can also use wet-or-dry sandpaper, but I would not use anything more coarse than 800 or 1000 grit. (smaller numbers mean coarser grit)

Deglosser at Home Depot or Lowe's. Works great!

Turpentine should work for this. Just rub it on to dull the finish and then wipe it off
