They are taught that by their parents a lot of the time. Complete lack of information and exposure to those races. They don't like what they don't understand.

Racism is a very confusing thing
It may have to do with out the person is raised, if they were taught to hate as a child from their parents, they are likely to feel that was as adults.
It could be that they had a bad experience with a person of a certain race and decided rather closed-mindedly that all people of that race are the same.
Perhaps it is lack of education and understanding?
Or it’s a culture thing. Many Americans (not all) are very closed minded about other cultures and seem to think the American culture is the best way of life.
Maybe the really hate themselves deep down inside and project it towards another race.

I guess the answer will vary with the individual. Some are just hateful, ignorant or fearful. There are characteristics that are more prevalent among one race than another. You appear to be black and I will tell you honestly that, although I have many black friends, I am leary of young black men that are high school drop-outs because of statistics that show a high percentage have been in prison. I am leary of a young white high school drop-out if he has tatoos and long hair because, to me, it may indicate drug use. Asians have a high chance of getting hired because statistics favor their work habits. So, although I will like my different friends equally, I do use race as an indicator when I have to evaluate potential job candidates.

People like to simplify their lives. One way of doing this is to place others into categories, to use to predict behavior. Skin color/race is, unfortunately, a rather convenient want of categorizing people. This is a foundation, but modern racism is far more complex due to media, social, and cultural influences.
And yes, I realize I am also making a bit of a generalization with the above statement, but research suggests that it is a rather prevalent behavioral pattern.

Some say it's upbringing, they were taught to be racist.
Some say it's psychological, hate is a coping mechanism that lets them feel better about themselves at the expense of another race.
Some say it's genetic, fear and distrust of outsiders used to be a survival mechanism that is bred into our genes.
In reality, nobody knows for sure. I beleive it's a little of all three.

Some people are just unevolved in that area. Totally sucks, but it's a fact of life. Hopefully it will be different in the future.
