that's an orb weaver. It's a harmless garden spider. They do tend to get rather large, but they can't hurt you. As a matter of fact they very beneficial and eat loads of insects you'd probably rather not have around. Orb weavers come in a multitude of colors, shapes, sizes, and patters, but what they do have in common is that they weave an orb shaped web.
They are definitely among the coolest looking spiders out there and a lot of fun to watch in the garden. Here are some pics of different orb weavers.

EDIT: As for the question of the number of legs, these particular orb weavers tend to tuck their legs in close to their abdomen. I think there may be a pic of that in the site I left. It's just a fluke that there appears to be only six.

This is not a spider. It only has six legs. Spiders (arachnids) have eight legs. This is an insect.

Hi. I only count six legs, but search for "Golden orb" and see if you get a match. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.waratahsoftware.com.au/thumbnails/spiders/tb_goldenorb_p3250047.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.waratahsoftware.com.au/wp_spiders_golden_orb.html&h=300&w=400&sz=15&hl=en&start=20&um=1&tbnid=egFdIwidE00_8M:&tbnh=93&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3D%2522Golden%2Borb%2522%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN
