I'm in Algebra 1 and I'm working on intergers and stuff. How would I solve this equation? 3x+9=5
I think it's something like: 3x+9-9=5-9 or something like that. Aren't you supposed to subtract 9 from both sides or something?? Anyway, when I did it like that, the answer was wrong. Help!

God i wish my homework was still that easy T_T ok first off your over all goal is to get the x to be by itself on one side so yeah you subtract 9 on both sides which leaves 3x=5-9 which is the same as 3x= -4 then you have to get rid of the 3 to do that you have to divide 3 on both sides....which would leave you with the improper fraction x= -4/3

Yes you subtract 9 from both sides first. Then divide both by 3.

PEMDAS (Parentheses-Exponents-Multiplication/Division-Addition/Subtraction) is the order at which you solve normal math problems.
In problems like this you work backwards. (SADMEP)

So Subtract the 9:

3x +9(-9) = 5(-9)

Then divide the 3:

3x/3= -4/3

The answer would be x= -4/3

3x+9=5
3x+9-9=5-9
3x= -4
3x/3 = -4/3
x = -1.3
the answer should be in fraction

Follow the link below there is VERY good video of basic algebra.
make sure you book mark the page because the other book here can help for year and years.

good luck

it funny that I would get a thumb down rating. When I'm as the saying goes "teaching you how to fish" odd
