In the twenty to thirty thousand years that humans have existed, trillions of people have died. Old age, illness, accident, evil intent, act of God, war, plague, suicide, governmental sanctioned. Trillions have died.
That said, worldwide some 18-20 million bodies can be accounted for. Be they entombed, buried, cremated and settled into an urn, or even encased in glass, less than one tenth of a percent of all the deaths in history can be traced.
It's not a thought you think about too much. Until you realize that even walking down the street to the mail box, you could be treading on the one time resting place of dozens of individuals at some point in time. Or a cemetary that you never knew was there. My friends, you never know what may lie six feet away. Have fun the next time you take a walk!
Truly it was a beautiful spot.
Having taken some deliberate wrong turns on the long and winding road to my sister's house in Utah, my camera laden wife and I wound up in Iowa, at one of the more scenic places in this country. What made it so lovely was the fact that it was marked on no maps and was therefore unsullied by human hands. It was a small grove dotted with patches of wild peonies that unfolded itself around a shimmering green pond.
The whole grove could be walked in less than five minutes, but my wife and I were too breathless to do anything but stare after first discovering it.
"This looks too 'natural' to be natural," she said with both befuddlement and rapture in her voice.
As soon as she said it I knew she was right. I don't think anxiety began playing in my mind at that point, but something uneasy certainly did.
If a place could be said to have spirit, then this one had it in droves. It wanted you. It opened it's arms to you. It did everything but serve you tea and crumpets. Yet in it's desire, thrumming subtely underneath, was a kind of malice.
My wife began taking pictures because that's what you did when you found a place like this. The pond was the focal point, but the brave clusters of bright pink peonies and sporadic outjutting of an ashe or oak tree adorned each potential photograph. If what happened hadn't have happened, those photo's might have won an award.
Somehow, I had been staring completely mesmerized at this grove. I'm not sure how much time elapsed or what I was even staring at. All I know is that the sharp sqwuak of a blackbird tore me from my revery and brought my surroundings sharply back into focus. Somehow, in my dream state, I had entered the grove and was halfway to the pond. Beside me, my wife's eyes were glazed over. I watched her take a slow deliberate step forward, and it was clear that she was unaware she was walking.
I'm sure this is the point where concern took over in my mind.
"Sherr!" I hissed, grasping my wife's elbow. "Sherr! Come on! Something isn't right here."
"Hmmmmm?" She murmured. The glaze left her eyes a little, but not completely. And oh those eyes. Crystalline blue. Deep as the ocean. I fell into them. Swam in them. Bathed in them. Those eyes without a face.
Once again it was the blackbird that saved me. A sqwuak of pain erupted from the bird somewhere to my left and brought my mind back into focus. The pond was just a few steps away and my wife stood right at the edge of it. I lunged for her and managed a firm grip on her wrist.
"Come on Sherr! Run for you life! Let's go!!" I screamed trying to bring her back to the present.
It worked. Realization dawned in her eyes and she began to turn from the pond, still loosely gripping the camera with the hand I wasn't coveting.
"What ha-"
That was all she had time for. A blast of frigid air shot through me and hammered her backward. The unexpected force caused me to lose my grip and Sherry literally flew backward six feet before landing in the pond. She stared at me with a dazed expression, her head and shoulders still visible above the water. Then she went under.
I am so ashamed of my cowardice. I can only say that I swear I was going to go in after her. I had even braced myself for the leap that would have landed me in the pool as well.
But that's when my eyes happened upon the blackbird. Or rather, what was left of it. It's torn shredded mutilated body shucked almost clean of feathers lay almost directly at my feet. What kind of force or thing can do that?
Yes I ran. I left her. Not a minute goes by that I don't berate myself for my cowardice. Twice now I've had the gun in my mouth fully prepared to pull the trigger, but my cowardice wins out yet again. Oh my Sherr! Little Sherry! To what horrid end did you come?
***
Eighteen thousand years ago, the land that is now Iowa was a vast wilderness inhabited by almost no one. Almost.
A tribe of very bizarre individuals numbering only a few dozen made their home in a small grove. This tribe practiced such bizarre rituals of sacrifice and visited such obscenities upon the land that their very passing tainted the soil. There they lay in foul profusion for eighteen thousand years, entertaining only the occasional wayward visitor.
You never do know what lies just six feet away.....

One day on Halloween night a magical mystery tour guide had arrived. I felt something in my spirit he was about six feet away on the long and winding road. Music! Music! Music! he called. A blackbird flew on his shoulder. Run for your life my mind said. Then I looked up. He was the Monster Mash, Eyes without a face. If only I had a brain I thought I might run away. Then his blood started streaming down my face. He had struck. He started to strike a little boys neck. It was a ghost. He killed the little boy just as violent as it could be but then all of a sudden I felt something grab my neck he was going for me! He was holding my neck I started to turn blue he punched me in my face. He hung me on a tree used me as a dartboard and drowned me under the stream. The ghost has struck again. If only I had run away. I was dead. I knew it he lifted me up put a knife in my side and only water came out. Byebye me on that haloween night that was such a fright.

an old man was walking along a deserted trail, wen he heard someone shouting be hind him "RUN FOR YOUR LIFE", he turned and saw a large crowd of screaming people running towards him. they were running away from a giant ipod playing the song THE MONSTER MASH, the ipod had EYES WITHOUT A FACE, and on top of it was sitting a BLACK BIRD. IF ONLY I HAD A BRAIN thought the old man, a spare one that is, to lend to those people who are screaming, because this road is THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD and there is no end to it, they really must turn back. a young woman screamed"MUSIC,MUSIC,MUSIC somebody please stop the music!" what a silly woman though the man, as he stopped to sit on a bench, to observe what he was seeing, the crowd were only SIX FEET AWAY, but the man did not worry, for he was only a SPIRIT on this MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR and the terrible music could not hurt him!

Run for your life,
It's the graveyard bash;
The airwaves are rife
With "The Monster Mash".
In this night of fright,
A blood-curdling scream is heard,
I think that eyes without a face
Glare and stare in my inward space,
For grinning Death won't speak with breath.
The omen in this gloamin' is an evil blackbird!
A rendezvous is due with Death!
This night of horrors would have showed --
If I only had a brain---
Would've showed the winding road
Ahead holds dread and too much pain!
Music! Music! Music!
The creepy air, the ghastly strain
Is making me lose it, lose it, lose it!
I need silver bullets and wolf-bane!
For six feet away, straight on down,
A pale vampire in grave straits dire,
At war with a werewolf will be found!
My flesh and blood they both desire.
The winner tonight will invite me to dinner,
And soon will emerge from the ground!
How terribly real, I feel, are the stakes!
My body quakes with shivers and shakes!
My body and soul are surely their goal!
My luck is shot, my guts they'll spill,
They've already got my Cousin Bill!
My trembling soul I fear they'll steal.
Give me a monster-repellant pill!
The stakes are high, for it is I
Who will be the main course of the meal!
Will you spirit me away?
I've had enough, I'm sure!
Enough of this scary Halloween Day,
And this magical mystery tour!

IF I ONLY HAD A BRAIN I know I wouldn't have been WALKING DOWN THAT LONG AND WINDING ROAD I had been warned about from the man, I can only describe as EYES W/O A FACE! Everytime I looked back I would see a BLACKBIRD- Was it the SPIRIT of the evilness in these woods, or was it really a Blackbird?? Suddenly as the spirit came close to me I started to scream, but all that came out of my mouth was MUSIC,MUSIC,MUSIC! The spirit took me over, and I felt cold...like it had sucked the mere life out of me. As soon as I came to, the blackbird was by my side picking leaves and rocks off my body. I knew at this very moment....I had to RUN FOR MY LIFE!

It was the sorrowful chirping of the BLACKBIRD that woke me up. I had no clue where I was. I looked around me as I sat up in my pyjamas. It looked like... Oh My God!! No, it just could not be! I had to be dreaming! But there I was. Lying on THE LONG WINDING ROAD that led to THE MONSTER MASH. I had fallen into the macabre and horrid settings of the horror novel I was reading before I fell asleep!
I shivered with fright. I knew too well who stalked this long road. No one had ever walked this road and lived, what do I -
"Stop there you mortal flesh from the world beyond!" came an eerie, sinister and guttural voice behind me. I felt goose bumps crawl all over my skin. IF ONLY I HAD A BRAIN I should have started running from the time I awoke! I knew that voice. It was the SPIRIT Ackalingo! It only ate human flesh and ate with relish and gusto. First it decapitated the person and drank the blood that spewed out from the head.
I turned around slowly and saw it hovering over the ground about six feet away. He was a mostrous sight to behold with huge bat like wings. He had two large eyeballs that rose on a stalk from its neck. It had no head. The ugly mouth was a horizontal slit on its neck. The creature was all EYES WITHOUT A FACE. From somewhere at the back of my mind came a thought. MUSIC! MUSIC! MUSIC! I had read in the book that the spirit without a face loved music and was easily carried away with it. I started singing my favourite song, titled 'MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR'. The spirit was startled at first at the sound of my voice but then gradually started smiling. It was a creepy sensation watching it smile from the neck. Then it started twirling and dancing and rose higher and higher into the sky. I raised my voice to make it audible as it rose higher in ecstasy.
"Run for your life!!" I said to myself and that was when I suddenly woke up. My bed was drenched with sweat and I had been hugging my pillow. It had been a horrific nightmare. No more Stephen King for me, I promised myself.

Once upon a time a guy named James went to The monster Mash. He was all excited about going he even dressed up like a BLACKBIRD. As he was walking towards the MONSTER MASH he saw a sign that siad "MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR". What the heck James thought as he decided to go on the mystery tour and not go to the Mash. As he walked up towards the gate to stand in line for the tour all he could hear was MUSIC! MUSIC! MUSIC! Finally it was James turn to go in for the tour. The gate slammed behind him. As he started walking down THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD it became dark and he didnt have a light. He thought to himself, what have i gotten in to??? IF I ONLY HAD A BRAIN. He had only walked about SIX FEET AWAY from the gate when he saw some EYES WITHOUT A FACE and they told him to RUN FOR YOUR LIFE! Without hesitation he ran and he ran fast! He thought they must have belonged to a SPIRIT. James kept running and before he knew it he fell off of a cliff. As he was falling he could see his life flash before him, he was just about to hit the ground when......... JAMES!! JAMES JOHNSON WAKE UP ITS TIME FOR SCHOOL. HmMMMM It was only a dream!

I my SPIRIT went on a MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR to see the BLACKBIRD. I regret it now, but IF I ONLY HAD A BRAIN, I wouldn't have gone on that scary tour. Once I got on THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD, I heard incessant MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC! I came around the bend and I saw EYES WITHOUT A FACE hovering only SIX FEET AWAY from me. I saw a man who, in passing, yelled at me to "RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!" Suddenly, I saw the eyeless MONSTER MASH the man whole, accusing him of stealing his eyes.

i was walkin in the woods with my little sister when she got left behind and i went looking for her. all of a sudden she was running towards me screaming: THE BLACKBIRD!
i started mocking her" oh, IF I ONLY HAD A BRAIN,
but as she was approaching i saw with horror that her face was bloody and there were scratches all over her neck. i grabbed her and ran acros THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD. i kept saying to myself RUN FOR YOUR LIFE, cause thats what i was doing, even though i didnt knew what i was running away from. but then i felt as if someone, a SPIRIT, hat pushed me. i stopped, looked around me and i laid my sister on the ground. she was half conscius and mumbling: MUSIC!MUSIC!MUSIC! i tried to call 911 but my cell phone battery was dead, just like i saw in that movie, THE MONSTER MASH. i felt as if someone was watching me, like all over the trees were EYES WITHOUT A FACE hanging there and staring at me. i heard a noise behind me and someone said with a cold icy voice> ah yes THE MAGICAL MISTERY TOUR. youll be sorry you came here. i turned around and, SIX FEET AWAY FROM ME, there he was. my dead hamster. :))
