your computer needs a disk check ever so often... (maybe two weeks depending on usage.) it has detected that you are due for a disk check
you can't run a defragmentation when there are problems with your drive, and the diskcheck will identify any problems. if you havent doen a diskcheck recently, the computer will refuse to defragment your drive as it could aggravate existing problems and cause huge damage to your computer
basically you need to run chdsk first
this is how to do it
Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer
1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
4. Use one of the following procedures:
• To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
• To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
• To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
The following table lists the exit codes that Chkdsk reports after it has finished:

You need to run Chkdsk first because you may have a corrupt segment on your HDD.
Chkdsk marks the corrupted area so other programs will skip that part and continue on.
PS: That's part of the DOS FAT (Disk Operating System File Allocation Table) method of file storing.
You may be able to run Chkdsk from the command window (Command screen).
When there, type (no quotes) "chkdsk c:"
If no-go try Control Panel.
When done run the DEFRAG program.

I usually run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, then defrag in that order. Defrag is the last thing you want to do after you have made sure there are no disk errors and have gotten rid of unnecessary files.
cl Start
Programs
Accessories
System Tools
to access these

There might be errors on your Hard Drive. It is best to run that Check disk. Usally XP well ask if you want to run that the next time you start up your computer. or just go to start Run then type that in and let it run (probably well reboot) Then run Defrag, only if XP says you need to run Defrag.

Try running defrag in safe mode. Reboot the computer and tap the F8 key until you get a menu. Choose safe mode. Run defrag. It works most of the time.

SOunds like youve got some bad sectors.
Either reboot, press f8, choose boot to command console and type chkdsk /f and let it run it's course. or open a command console within windows, type chkdsk /f and it will schedule a chk at your next reboot.
Then when you get back into windows.... ditch the microsoft defrag utility ang get something decent. I'd recommend O&O, or DiskTrix

just run it. go to my computer, right click on the drive and go to properties, tools, then 'error checking' and click 'check now'.
just check the top box, and if it asks to reboot, it will scan faster that way.
the default defragmenter takes about a few days to defrag your drive depending on when you last did it and how bad it is.
download 'auslogics' disk defragmentor from www.download.com or do a google search, it will defrag things much much faster (but dosnt do larger files)
if it's heavily fragmented, then download the diskeeper trial (it will replace your default windows defragmentor but when you uninstall it, the old one comes back), and you can get it pretty much sorted untill the trial period runs out. but then afterwards use the default windows defragmenter to keep it good.

Download and run Ccleaner it's free and it's a very good registry cleaner it gets everything back in order. The est of the answers are okay too but may be a bit complicated if you are not sure what you are doing! and some of them take a bit of time to do their work. Ccleaner is quick and defective.

Cheers.
