not all 20th century, but i might pick Ghandi. he was just such a marvelous example of how pacifism can still be revolutionary, and of following your beliefs, but also an example of how nothing works out how you want in this 20th century world - even he did not get everything he was asking for and had to make unpleasant compromises. it's a sad and perfect example of life in our times and at least one good way to try to combat it.

ok....there is several I would consider...Sir Alexander Fleming ,Howard Walter Florey and Clodomiro Picado Twight...all these people found, studied, and developed Penicillin

SIr Alexander Fleming is attributed as discovering Penicillin
Howard Walter Florey developed penicillin for use in medicine
Clodomiro Picado Twight studied ,before Fleming, and submitted his findings to the Paris Academy of Science but failed to patent his findings ...so ,pretty much no credit

also...Jonas Salk..for the polio vaccine

I know you said one...but I believe both this antibiotic and vaccine has to rank as some of the greatest discoveries ever made ....and these men who were able to bring them about...do truly ,in my opinion, rank at greatness ...

the 20th century produced many great individuals...I chose these men because of the effect their findings has had on the world at large and how many lives has been spared because of it..........

My personal opinion is that Winston Churchill deserves the honors. He singularly stood against Germany from 1939 on, refusing to bow to its military might while enduring bombing, unrestricted submarine warfare against Britain's merchant ships and a constant threat of invasion by a much larger and better equipped army. Had Churchill surrendered, or failed to keep the British people's hopes alive when they stood alone against the Axis, the United State's later entry into the war would not have had the same impact, as Britain was the base of nearly all operations in Europe. It is difficult to imagine, for example, mounting a D-Day scale invasion from 3,000 miles away.

President Roosevelt, He was the president that pushed the American economy into what it is today, and he created a social system for everyone when they will eventually get old. The UN is part of his legacy, and Paxi World ( some what). Lets not forget that Russia was saved by this man alone, and India would have been over run by Japan even with 2 million soldiers gaurding the borders without his declaration of war on both fronts.
