and it subsequently changed how you viewed/felt about the song?

My example is The Cure's "Close To Me." I always thought it was about a love affair and the fear of becoming too close to someone. A few years ago I saw Robert Smith in an interview in which he talked about the lyrics of the song. I was shocked to hear the song was about writer's block. :) I still love the song but it changed the endearing feel I once had for it. I almost wish that I did not know it was about writer's block.

Paradise City - GnR Remember quite vividly my father and I listening to it. Never got "Take me down to the paradise city - Where the grass is green and the girls are pretty" out of my head. BQ - Dark, though I'd say it largely depends on the genre in question. BQ - Not a big sweets guy... maybe an Apple Fritter? not sure if it counts as a doughnut though. Cinnamon rolls are probably the closest I come to a sweet infatuation... A (s)weakness, if you will.

The Led Zeppelin song 'What Is And What Should Never Be'. I just loved the sound of it. Last year I found out Robert Plant wrote it when he fell in love with his wife's younger sister.

I've loved the Mike Oldfield song 'Moonlight Shadow', since I was little. But it was only earlier this year I found out it was about the death of John Lennon. After that, the meaning of the lyrics seems so obvious!
And at the same time I found out about his song 'To France', which is about Mary Queen of Scots.

'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' by Pink Floyd. I loved it but didn't really understand it, until I discovered the Roger Waters wrote it in tribute to former band mate Sid Barrett.

Another one which suddenly makes sense is the Stevie Nicks song 'Fall From Grace'. Apparently it's about the pressure of being in a world famous band.

I've actually head 2 stories about the subject matter of ''Hey Man Nice Shot'' by Filter. I've heard it was about Kurt Cobain. I also heard it was about an armed man that took his own life on a live news program. Either way it's kind of creepy. I had already heard the song several times and really liked it a lot before I heard these stories. I do not really think it changed my fondness for the tune but I definetly listened to it differently after that.

Most songs have no point, but some do. My favorite band Project 86(greatest band ever) has so many great songs but very few make sinse
Sincerly Ichabob- a song about Alice in Wonder land but is a heavy metal song
Molotov- Confessions of an old drinking problem
Songs are ment for enjoyment if they don't make sense so be it, if they do more power to it

The most bizzare example I can think of is the White Lion song "Little Fighter."

It's about a damned Greenpeace boat that was sunk by sabotage.

The song has such an amazing guitar solo and a pretty catchy hook..... but it's about a boat owned by a bunch of tree hugging hippies.

Just doesn't sound the same anymore.

Well, I had the same situation with a song from Panic! at the disco, the song 'lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off' I thought it was about infidelity, and in fact it says somethin' about it, but it also talks about sex and how girls are so stupid to get manipulated by their horny boyfriends and have sex easily... So we have to interpretate the lyrics according to context and not in a literal way.

I heard somewhere one time that Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" is actually about heroin use. I have no idea if that's even true but even if it isn't, it will always change they way I listen to it.

Sometimes the rumors about song meanings can affect the listener just as much as the truth, so maybe that's why the songwriter will tell what inspired them?

I was under the impression that the Billy Idol song White Wedding was about necrophilia, which gave it a real creepy vibe. However, most say it's about a man who loves a woman who is marrying another dude. Still a great song even if it doesn't spook me out as much as it did originally. Actually, who am I kidding? I'm relieved, lol.

This is why I sometimes hate learning a song's meaning, it can make it no longer as special to you. I thought "Thinking Of You" by A Perfect Circle was about obsessing over someone and being unable to move on...turns out it's about masturbation. And I thought "Sanctified" by NIN was about feeling justification through sex, but it's actually about a crack addiction.

I always thought that "Kill Rock and Roll" by System of a Dpown was just another of their "quacky" songs, but I later found out that it was about a rabbit that Daron accidently ran over and buried.

That gave the song more poinancy for me.

Accually, that's happened with alot of their songs.
