I have an 88 dodge dakota, it's making a hissing noise under the dash, when I press the brake pedal it stops, everyone's telling me it's the booster, and it makes sense. But before I go and replace it I'd really like to be sure.
Also; what can go wrong if I do it myself? Is it just a part that you buy and then swap out? Or is it more complex? Can I do it myself?
I'm a student, so I'm REALLY poor, if I absolutely had to I could save for a few months and have a mechanic do it, but I'd really rather do it myself.

DIY, you're golden, plug and play, be careful not to rupture any brake lines while swapping them, or you will have to replace and bleed the system...

Look at the booster, it has a rubber hose on it that may be your problem. If the booster itself is leaking it can be replaced, they aren't cheap. You also could have a vacuum leak in the hoses under the dash that control the heater duct doors. If the booster is to blame your engine will probably die when idling and you apply the brakes. The hoses under dash would stop making noise when brakes are applied because the booster uses all of the vacuum. In this case it probably wouldn't affect the idle.

It's fairly simple technically, but time consuming, and the nuts under the dash holding the booster on can be a real bugger to get to.

If you intend to keep this truck, spend $20 and buy a repair manual for it. Haynes or Chiltons are both good books.
It's the best $20 you will ever spend.

from under the hood look at the booster most likely will find a hose almost an inch (25mm) pluged into the booster ,unplug it and cap it off .start the truck up see if the hiss stops ,make sure to reattach the hose ,it sounde like the back seal is shot ,
