Because this is a scientific study, not a pet in your home. The researchers are trying to study what happens to these animals in their natural setting, in their real world. They aren't allowed to interfere - saving Flower's life would have upset the natural order of the ecosystem. If you tried to save every animal that was destined to die on the Serengeti, it would soon be overrun, and animals would starve if they weren't allowed to eat each other.
Besides, even if they wanted to, I don't think Flower ever emerged from the burrow. They couldn't reach her.

Flower was not a pet. This is a documentary show, not a reality program, interfering with natural selection would devalue it as a source of valid information.
